How to Remove Background Noise in DaVinci Resolve
Scope, up front: this guide cleans a recording — a file that already exists. Noise happening live is a different problem entirely; everything below happens after the fact.
In Resolve 20 Studio: select the clip on the Edit page, open the Inspector → Audio panel, enable Voice Isolation, and set the Amount around 70–80. On the free version, the workable route is Inspector → Audio → Dialogue Leveler with Background reduction ticked. Pick one — never stack both on the same clip.

The Studio route — Voice Isolation
- Select your clip in the timeline on the Edit page.

- Tick Background reduction beneath it.
- Keep the effect moderate — this tool levels dialogue first and reduces noise second, so expect help, not rescue.
When it fails: heavy or musical backgrounds are beyond the free tools. If your clip needs real separation and you're on free Resolve, exporting the audio to a dedicated cleaner beats fighting the limitation.
Verify, then render
- A/B with the enable toggle — a good setting survives instant comparison.
- Listen for the gaps: room tone should quieten, not vanish into digital silence.
- Render a short section first before committing the whole timeline.
Resolve renders the effect into your export, so a thirty-second test render costs nothing and catches artifacts a monitoring pass missed.
Resolve's over-suppression tell is dialogue that sounds lifted out of the scene — the voice floats over digital silence and every cut becomes audible. It happens when Voice Isolation's Amount runs at 100, or when Isolation and Background reduction are stacked on the same clip. Keep the Amount in the 70s and let a little honest room tone survive.
